Grand Hostel Ivalo sijaitsee Ivalon entisessä emäntäkoulun rakennuksessa, joka valmistui vuonna 1960. Kuvassa näkyy presidentti Urho Kekkonen vierailulla rakennustyömaalla ja myöhemmin hän yöpyi koululla usein matkoillaan Pohjois-Lappiin.
Ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä koululla annettiin kotitalousopetusta sekä paikallisille että muualta tulleille naisille. Vuonna 2023 tuli kuluneeksi sata vuotta siitä, kun Inarin alueella aloitettiin kotitalousopetus. Monet paikalliset miehet löysivätkin vaimonsa emäntäkoululta, ja kosijoita saapui koulun tiloihin monin keinoin, esimerkiksi katon kautta. Opettajat, rehtorin johdolla, pyrkivät suojelemaan koulua näiltä odottamattomilta vierailijoilta.
Kotitalousopetuksen päätyttyä koulurakennukset olivat Kalotin Oppimiskeskus Säätiön ja Saamelaisalueen koulutuskeskuksen käytössä. Viime vuosina ivalocenter.fi on tarjonnut entisen koulun tiloja vuokralle asumiseen ja yritystoimintaan.
Hostel-toiminta rakennuksessa alkoi vuonna 2024.
Grand Hostel Ivalo is operating in the former home economics school building in Ivalo, which was built in 1960. The photo shows president Urho Kekkonen visiting the construction site; he later frequently stayed at the school during his trips to Northern Lapland.
In its early decades, the school provided home economics education to both local and non-local women. In 2023, it marked 100 years since home economics education began in the Inari region. Many local men found their future wives at the school, and suitors would find creative ways to visit the premises – sometimes even entering through the roof. Teachers, led by the principal, worked to protect the school from these unexpected visitors.
After the home economics program ended, the school buildings were used by the Kalotin Learning Center Foundation and the Sámi Education Institute. In recent years, ivalocenter.fi has rented out the former school facilities for residential and business purposes.
The accommodation services in the building began in 2024.
